1. (C) Embassy Tokyo Political Officer met January 11 with
MOFA First Middle East Division Syria Officer Hitoshi
Ishizuka to request a public statement from Japan in support
of Syrian human rights and democracy activists and a call to
Syria to release all detained prisoners of conscience,
including 30 members of the Damascus Declaration National
Council. Ishizuka made note of the request and said he would
pass it up, but was unable to commit to any action.
2. (C) Department should be aware that MOFA Middle Eastern
and African Affairs Bureau Director General Norihiro Okuda is
scheduled to meet in Washington on January 15 with NEA DAS
Gordon Gray and DAS Lawrence Butler. Department may, if
deemed appropriate, wish to consider raising this subject
with him at that time.
