1. LEAD STORIES: All Japanese dailies on Tuesday gave
front-page play to the release of data on land prices
by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport,
which pointed to a slow increase in the value of real
estate in the Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya areas. The
dailies noted that the subprime loan crisis in the U.S.
has apparently prompted many foreign financial
portfolio managers to stop investing in Japanese
property.

2. "Torch Relay Turning into Source of Friction" The
liberal Asahi wrote (3/25): "Monday's flame-lighting
ceremony in Greece ahead of the Beijing Olympics was
temporarily disrupted due to a protest by people
denouncing Chinese policy in Tibet. In view of the
mounting international outcry over Beijing's crackdown
in Tibet, the torch relay is likely to become a source
of contention that sparks protests against China around
the world."

3. "Calls to Mount for Musharraf to Step Down" The top-
circulation, moderate Yomiuri's Islamabad correspondent
reported (3/25): "With Monday's approval of new Prime
Minister Gillani by the Pakistani parliament, the
nation's political turmoil unleashed by the
assassination of former Prime Minister Bhutto late last
year has apparently come to an end. As the coalition
government to be launched shortly is set to step up
calls for President Musharraf to resign, political
jockeying is likely to intensify."
