SUBJECT: TOKYO MEDIA REACTION - SERBIA-AFTERMATH OF
KARADZIC'S ARREST
1. LEAD STORIES: Front-page stories on Monday morning
included a meeting on Sunday between Japanese Foreign
Minister Koumura and Chinese State Councilor Dai
Bingguo in Beijing.
2. "Truth Should Be Disclosed for Ethnic
Reconciliation" The conservative Sankei editorialized
(8/18): "Proceedings began at the International
Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia against
former Bosnian Serb leader Karadzic, who was indicted
for war crimes in the conflict in Bosnia-Herzegovina
that killed more than 200,000.... The truth should be
brought out through the proceedings in a calm manner,
as the idea of ethnic cleansing is said to have existed
among Croatians and others, as well. Each nation should
work on ethnic reconciliation in order not to repeat
past mistakes.... In Serbia and elsewhere there is no
future for narrow-minded, backward-looking
nationalism."
