1. "China to Shift Economic Focus to Domestic Demand"
The conservative Sankei editorialized (1/27):
"According to Chinese statistics, the nation's gross
domestic product (GDP) for 2007 increased by 11.4
percent from the previous year. Although Beijing has
posted double-digit growth for five consecutive years,
there are warning signs for its economy, such as the
economic slowdown in the U.S., China's largest trade
partner, and inflationary pressure at home. China needs
to swiftly reduce its overdependence on foreign
investment and exports and instead expand its domestic
demand."

2. "Strategy for Peace Should Be Reconstructed" The
liberal Asahi argued in an editorial (1/27): "The
ongoing unrest in Sri Lanka clearly demonstrates the
difficulty in bringing peace to a troubled nation. The
government of Sri Lanka has abrogated the ceasefire
agreement it concluded with the Liberation Tigers of
Tamil Eelam six years ago. Although Japan had mediated
between the two parties to bring peace to the nation,
Tokyo's efforts will likely end in failure. Sri Lankan
President Rajapaksa blamed continuing terrorist attacks
for his decision to annul the agreement. Conflict
between the two parties could flare up again. They
should swiftly return to political dialogue."
