TAGS: PGOV PINS KPAL IS
SUBJECT: EVICTION DELAYED
REF: A. HANKINS/MORENO EMAIL 7/16/2008 (8:55 P.M.)
B. JERUSALEM 1257
Classified By: Charge d'Affaires Luis G. Moreno. Reason 1.4 (B/D).
(C) Embassy officers received demarche instructions on the
evening of July 16 regarding the possible eviction of the
"Al-Kurd" family that resides in Shaykh Jarrah, East
Jerusalem (ref A). Charge raised these concerns with the
North America Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Poloffs also raised the issue with senior advisors in the
Israeli ministries of Interior and Public Security. We
understand from these contacts that the representatives of
both ministries conferred with each other before responding
to the Embassy. Senior officials in all three ministries
confirmed that there would be no evictions (or demolitions)
in Jerusalem on July 17. Beyond the one-day delay, it is
unclear what actions, if any, the GOI will undertake.
