SANCTIONS

Poloff delivered reftel demarche on December 22 to Head of
the South East Asia Unit at the MFA, Liselott Andersson. She
said Sweden continues to support EU sanctions on Burma, but
the sanctions regime must be "fine tuned" to be effectively
implemented and have the desired impact: "there is no point
to sanctions if one cannot implement them." The December
GAERC produced a statement on Burma but no actions were taken
to revise the sanctions regime. The EU Commission currently
is now reviewing ways to "fix" the sanctions regime but
Andersson did not know when a decision will be made. As to
deleting target lists, Andersson said this was only one of
the options under consideration by the Commission and will
not necessarily be the one chosen.
