REQUEST

1. This is an action request. USUN is requested to seek from
the Committee established pursuant to resolution 1521 (2003)
concerning Liberia an exemption to the arms embargo on
Liberia established by the Security Council.
2. BEGIN LETTER TO THE CHAIR OF THE 1521 (LIBERIA SANCTIONS)
COMMITTEE:
The U.S. Mission hereby requests approval, in accordance with
paragraph 2(e) of resolution 1521 (2003) and paragraph 2 of
resolution 1683 (2006),for exemptions to the arms embargo
imposed on Liberia by resolution 1521 (2003).
As part of its continuing security sector reform efforts in
Liberia, the United States Government would like to provide
additional equipment and training to the Government of
Liberia for their recently established Emergency Response
Unit (ERU). The United States originally provided weapons
and ammunition to the ERU pursuant to an exemption granted on
January 23, 2008 (S/AC.41/2008/OC.1). At this time the
United States respectfully requests an exemption under
paragraph 2 of resolution 1683 to provide the ERU with the
following items, and additional replacement parts as needed
to maintain the equipment referenced in the aforementioned
approval from the Committee. The United States also requests
an exemption under paragraph 2(e) of resolution 1521 to
provide members of the ERU armorer training. Such training
will enable these individuals to maintain the weapons
provided to the ERU by the United States.
