E.O. 12958: DECL: 02/21/2018
TAGS: PGOV PREL MK
SUBJECT: MACEDONIA: POSITION ON KOSOVO RECOGNITION UNCHANGED

REF: SECSTATE 16319

Classified By: POLOFF NEISULER FOR REASONS 1.4 (B) AND (D)

(C) In response to reftel points, MFA State Counselor Vasko
Grkov told us February 20 that Macedonia's position on Kosovo
recognition ("neither among the first, nor among the last")
remains unchanged. Expressing his satisfaction with the lack
of widespread violence in Kosovo, Grkov added that Macedonia
was following closely events there, but was not yet ready to
recognize Kosovo. Comment: Macedonian officials continue to
coordinate closely with Kosovo authorities on preparations
for alleviating the effects of a possible Serb border closure
by re-routing traffic to the Macedonia-Kosovo border
crossing. Macedonia also continues to play a critical role
in supporting KFOR logistics operations in Kosovo. End
comment.
