1. (SBU) PolOff met on June 27 with Marisol Nieto, MFA Acting
Director General of Multilateral Affairs, during which poloff
asked about the GOE's decision regarding Kosovo's
independence.
2. (C) Nieto said that the GOE's official position is to not
recognize Kosovo's independence. No formal announcement has
been made. Despite the fact that several letters from
presidents and foreign ministers had been sent to President
Rafael Correa and Foreign Minister Maria Isabel Salvador in
support of Kosovo's independence, and that President Correa's
initial inclination was to recognize Kosovo (ref B),the GOE
continues to believe that the political process to determine
the best solution for Kosovo had not yet run its course.
