(C) Political-Military Officer and the German Deputy Chief of
Mission, Konrad Scharinger, met with Veronika
Kuchynova-Smigolova, the director of the Czech MFA's Security
Policy Department, on the proposed CFE statement.
Kuchynova-Smigolova stated that the Czechs would like to see
a tougher text, but will support Germany and the USG on the
proposed CFE statement to help maintain the unity of the
alliance. She stressed that NATO must show the Russians that
the alliance is not divided on this issue. The MFA's
preference is not to open up the text to further debate.
However, the Czechs want the Bucharest communique to contain
specific references to Russia's commitments in Moldova and
Georgia and to make clear Russia's responsibility for this
situation.
