1. This is an action request -- please see para 4.
2. (C) Canada is willing to join the U.S. effort to persuade
governments to steer clear of Iran's November 30 conference
on nuclear energy. Department of Foreign Affairs and
International Trade (DFAIT) Senior Policy Advisor for
Non-Proliferation Che van Haastrecht told pol/miloff on
October 24 that Canada agrees with reftel points and is
pleased that the U.S. government is pressing them.
3. (C) Van Haastrecht promised to instruct Canadian
diplomatic posts to respond positively to direct U.S.
requests for joint, like-minded demarches on this issue. He
specified that Canada was willing to "use its leverage" with
Jordan, Kazakhstan, South Africa, and Romania, but also is
open to partnering with the U.S. in other countries. Van
Haastrecht requested a list of high-priority capitals where
the U.S. wants to conduct joint demarches with Canada.
4. (U) Action request: please provide such a list for
DFAIT's use with its relevant embassies.
