1. (C) Colleen Swords, Department of Foreign Affairs and
International Trade (DFAIT) Assistant Deputy Minister for
International Security Affairs (and Canada's G-8 Political
Director),told DCM August 15 that she was sure Canada would
support Afghanistan over Syria if the race for the IAEA Board
of Governors Middle East and South Asia seat came to a vote.
She did couch her statement, however, by noting she was
unfamiliar with the specifics of the issue. Swords said she
would pass reftel points to her relevant technical experts.
Poloff is following up with the DFAIT Non-Proliferation and
Disarmament Division deputy director and technical experts
regarding possible Canadian efforts to advocate on
Afghanistan's behalf.
