Luxembourg's MFA confirmed May 9 that the government planned
significant humanitarian assistance to Burma in the wake of
Cyclone Nargis. The GoL initially earmarked 75,000 Euros to
CARE Luxembourg to support the emergency activities of the
local CARE affiliate in Burma. On May 7 and 8, respectively,
Luxembourg's international cooperation directorate, located
within the MFA, approved two additional allotments of aid: a
100,000 Euro donation to the Luxembourg Red Cross to provide
shelter for 2,500 families; and a 125,000 Euro donation to
the World Food Program for the distribution of foodstuffs to
the most affected and vulnerable populations. In announcing
a total of 300,000 Euros in humanitarian assistance to the
devastated regions of Burma, the GoL emphasized that the
assistance will be made available just as soon as the Burmese
regime allows humanitarian organizations access to the
country.
