1. (C) On August 5, emboffs met with Jasna Lhotka, Minister
Plenipotentiary at the MFA's Asia, Africa and the Pacific
Division, to notify Slovenia of the new U.S. sanctions on
Burma and to seek Slovene views on the prospects for
further tightening of EU sanctions targeting the Burma
regime. Lhotka commented that the EU was divided on the
issue of Burma sanctions, and thus she doubted that the EU
would make any further moves. She indicated that Slovenia
opposed lifting sanctions without progress, but did not
necessarily favor extending sanctions. She noted that the
EU had tasked the Commission to study the efficacy of
current sanctions, and Slovenia would want to see those
results before the EU expanded sanctions. She mentioned
the possibility that some individual member states, but not
Slovenia, might adopt additional sanctions.
