SUBJECT: PERU REQUEST FOR SUPPORT IN PAHO ELECTION
1. (SBU) Action Request: The Government of Peru requested via
diplomatic note dated August 19 that the U.S. vote for Peru
in elections for the Executive Committee of the Pan-American
Health Organization. The elections will take place during the
48th Directing Council meeting September 29-October 3. Post
requests Department guidance on its response to the GOP
request.
2. (SBU) Text of the diplomatic note (unofficial translation):
The Ministry of Foreign Relations, Subsecretariat of
Multilateral Affairs, has the honor to request the support
for the Peruvian candidacy for one of the three vacancies on
the Executive Committee of the Pan-American Health
Organization in the elections that will take place during the
48th Directing Council meeting that will take place September
29-October 3.
The Government of Peru has established as one of its
priorities reinforcing its participation in the Pan-American
Health Organization and thus helping the organization reach
its goals in the areas of health and the fight against
poverty, with an emphasis on the prevention of illnesses and
improving the living conditions of the population.
