1. Econoff delivered reftel demarche to Secretary for Industry and
Trade Newby Kumwembe. According to information subsequently
provided, Malawi does not expect to ship its full allocation of
sugar for FY 2008. Malawi currently expects that it of its 10,530
metric ton allocated quota, it will ship 6,700 metric tons that will
arrive in the U.S. prior to October 1, 2008.
2. Mr. Kumwembe noted that the GOM is looking at programs to expand
production of sugar, and plans to have a second company export it to
the U.S. in the near future, possibly during FY 2009. Malawi hopes
that its future quota allocation will be maintained at levels at
least equivalent to the current year.
