1.(C) POLCOUNS on September 7 raised reftel points concerning
Third Committee 2008 human rights priorities with Dr. Hamad
Bu Rahamah, Counselor in MFA's International Organization's
Department and with Aysha Al-Dikheel, an assistant in the
same department. In presenting the demarche, POLCOUNS
stressed the urgency, in USG views, for a principled stand
against no-action motions and for strong country-specific
resolutions on Iran, Burma, and DPRK.
2. (C) In his response, Rahamah opined that the international
community would do well to focus human rights attention on
problems in Gaza, but assured POLCOUNS that the GOK would
carefully consider the arguments against no-action motions
and for resolutions on Iran, Burma and DPRK. It would be
essential, he noted, for any resolutions to be fair and
balanced.
3. (C) Aysha Al-Dikheel noted that she would be present in
New York for Third Committee deliberations and would be
available to engage with USG officials on these points.
