1. This cable responds to reftel requesting input for new required
reports to Congress on energy. Following are post's responses to
the four questions put forth in the cable:
A. Energy matters are handled by the economic section which
consists of seven persons: Economic Counselor, four direct-hire
economic officers, two foreign nationals, and one OMS.
B. One economic/finance officer covers matters relating to oil and
gas, devoting approximately 10% of her time to this issue. One ESTH
officer covers alternative energy sources, devoting approximately
10% of the time.
C. The economic/finance officer maintains ongoing contact with
Malaysia's national oil company Petronas as well as U.S. energy
companies operating in Malaysia and tracks and reports on new
developments in the oil and gas sector. The ESTH officer covers
sources of alternative energy, including biofuels.
D. Budget:
