1. (SBU) The Ziarat District Nazim, Delawar Khan Kakar, told Post
this evening that the death toll from the earthquakes is now
estimated to be over 180. He said that he expects that figure to
rise as relief workers gain access to more remote areas, as they are
now beginning to do. According to him, rescue workers have now
brought in cranes to remove debris from collapsed buildings and
houses. He now estimates over 50,000 homeless (unconfirmed).
2. (SBU) Kakar told Post that the Frontier Corps has three
helicopters conducting relieve operations in the district. The
provincial government has now established a hospital staffed with 30
physicians to treat the injured. There are a large number of NGOs
now operating in the hardest hit areas. Most are local NGOs, but
UNICEF is also present.
