SUBJECT: FINLAND PARTICIPATES IN EU WIREC PLEDGE

1. (SBU) According to WIREC participant Henri Backman,
Advisor to the Minister at the Finnish Ministry of Employment
and the Economy, Finland is participating in the EU's pledge
to obtain 20 percent of its energy needs from renewable
energy by 2020. Finland is not planning to make a separate
WIREC pledge.
2. (U) The Finnish delegation appreciated being invited to
WIREC and the opportunity to have Minister Mauri Pekkarinen
participate in the panel discussion on the role of forestry
in renewable energy production. Pekkarinen also met with
Energy Secretary Bodman and he toured the National Renewable
Energy Laboratory in Colorado.
