SUBJECT: GUINEA EAC - PRIME MINISTER KOUYATE DISMISSED
1. The Deputy Chief of Mission convened Post's Emergency
Action Committee Wedneday, May 21 to discuss the announced
dismissal of PM Kouyate last night and potential public
reaction to this event. Representatives from MGT, CA, RO,
DAO, USAID, PC, PAO, POL and RSO were present
2. The dismissal of the Guinean prime minister Lansana
Kouyate, was announced last night on the evening news. Dr.
Ahmed Tidiane Souare has been selected as the new prime
minister. Following the announcement there were sporadic
outbreaks of public protests and violence in Conakry and
other areas of Guinea which were quickly dispersed by
security forces. This morning the situation is calm, although
there are more security forces than usual in major areas
known for political violence in the past.
3. Post is issuing a warden message to alert the American
community. Post will continue to monitor the situation and
provide updates as warranted.
