1. (SBU) Per instructions in reftel, press reports on July 26
indicate that Energy Resources of Australia (ERA),which is
controlled by Rio Tinto (68 percent ownership) has reached
agreement with an unspecified utility in China to sell
uranium oxide from the Ranger mine in the Northern Territory
by the end of the year. No details on the contract price or
amount were released, but the sale was described as "small."
Marie Taylor, General Manager for the Uranium Industry
Section Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism,
confirmed that ERA's export license had been approved by the
Rudd government. This will be the first commercial shipment
of Australian uranium to the PRC since the signing of a
bilateral safeguards agreement in 2006. Taylor said that
while this was a small contract, they expected to see more
applications in the near future.
