SUBJECT: GOA SUPPORTS PROPOSED ARF CHAIRMAN'S STATEMENT ON
DISASTER PREPAREDNESS

REF: A. STATE 74383

B. STATE 61440

D. CANBERRA 592

(U) The Government of Australia maintains its position that
the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) would do well to establish
itself as a responsible international player with regard to
disaster preparedness, according to John Tilemann, Director
of the Strategic Policy Section at the Department of Foreign
Affairs and Trade. Consequently, GOA supports United States
efforts to include a strong statement on disaster
preparedness in the ARF Chairman's Statement to be issued
July 24. Support for the Chairman's Statement falls in line
with GOA efforts to establish a disaster guide for strategic
planners within ARF. Poloff delivered demarche points (REF A)
July 14.
