1. (SBU) Pol/Mil Officer met with Erika Thompson, Executive
Officer for Afghanistan, Department of Foreign Affairs and
Trade (DFAT),on April 8 to obtain information on Australia's
participation in the Paris Conference on Afghanistan. Ms.
Thompson confirmed that Australia will be represented at the
Ministerial level, although no decision has been made on
which Minister will attend. DFAT will recommend either
Parliamentary Secretary for International Development
Assistance Bob McMullan attend, or depending on the level of
participation by other countries, Foreign Minister Stephen
Smith. Ms. Thompson indicated that no pledge amount has been
designated yet. She will provide additional details as they
are available.

2. (SBU) Ms. Thompson asked who will be representing the
U.S. at the Conference. She also asked if the agenda will
address the concerns on the security aspects of program
implementation, especially in southern Afghanistan. She
observed that there is little or no UN or other security
presence in places like Oruzgan, where Australian assistance
programs are likely to focus.
