1. (U) Stephen Henningham, head of the Department of
Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) Fiji Task Force confirmed
the responses given by DFAT Pacific Regional Section (reftel
Canberra 299) immediately following the 26 March FFAM in an
April 2 meeting with Poloff. Australia fully supports the
PIF in its leadership role in promoting a return to
democratic rule in Fiji and endorses the Outcomes Statement
issued by the PIF Secretariat following the FFAM.
2. (U) Henningham reiterated the PIF should remain the
primary mechanism for addressing regional issues, however,
they see the UN Consultative Group and an EU group as
providing a useful role in informing and engaging the broader
international community.
