(C/NF) Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade told Embassy
Canberra that the Cabinet has approved Australian
participation in the TransPacific Partnership negotiations on
an FTA. This is not a surprise - Trade Minister Crean has
been very supportive of the TPP. The timing of the Cabinet
approval was quicker than originally expected, however, to
allow an announcement to be made during the APEC Leaders
Meeting in Lima later this month. The GOA asked us to keep
this news confidential until the announcement is made,
possibly by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.
