1. (C/REL AUS) Lisa Rice Madan, Assistant Secretary,
Southwest Asia Branch, Department of Foreign Affairs and
Trade (DFAT),confirmed Australia's continued support for
health and education programs in Pakistan's border regions
ref B. In addition, Australia started an AUD $250K (USD
$175K) counter-radicalization program in October through its
High Commission in Islamabad. The program is based on a
successful model from Indonesia and is designed to undermine
extremist ideology and support mainstream Islamic voices.
Under the program, the Australian High Commission provides
financial aid to local moderate Islamic partner programs
across a spectrum of activities. Other supporting activities
include continued discussions for the provision of Australian
counter-insurgency advisors, and enhanced defense cooperation
through broad-based training in Australia for the Pakistani
military.
