SUBJECT: REQUEST TO ALLIES FOR NEW DEMARCHE TO CHINA
REGARDING CHINA'S JANUARY 2007 ANTI-SATELLITE TEST

Classified By: POLITICAL COUNSELOR JAMES F. COLE. REASON: 1.4 (B) AND
(D)
(S/NF) Polcouns delivered points in reftel to DFAT North
Asia Division First Assistant Secretary Peter Baxter on
January 8. Baxter said that China's anti-satellite test, its
consequences and future intentions have been and will
continue to be strong points raised in virtually every
conversation the GOA has with Beijing. He noted that the
Chinese always seem taken aback when the GOA raises the
issue, appearing to believe that the subject would have faded
with passing months. Baxter said that this is a problem for
the entire region and that Canberra will again express to
Beijing its concerns and continue to press the Chinese for
transparency in their military activities, including last
year's anti-satellite test and related issues.
