1. (U) This message is sensitive but unclassified, and not
for Internet distribution.
2. (SBU) Emboff made reftel points April 18 to Minister
Carlos Hernandez of the MFA's Office of International
Security, Nuclear, and Space Affairs. Hernandez replied
April 22, saying that Argentina's UN Mission in New York is
ready to cooperate with strengthening the mandate of the UNSC
1540 Committee and extending it for five years. Hernandez
downplayed Argentina's possible role in the effort to get
other countries on board, but he did say that Argentina will
engage with other Latin American countries (he specifically
mentioned Panama) to that end.
3. (SBU) Hernandez suggested that USUN should get in touch
with Claudia Corti, who will be Argentina's point person for
the issue in New York.
