1. Bolivian President Evo Morales, on the margins of a
February 22 summit meeting in Buenos Aires with Argentine
President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner and Brazilian
President Lula da Silva, told largest-circulation daily
newspaper "Clarin" that he wanted "the whole world to know
that this conspiracy against me is headed by the ambassador
of the United States (Philip Goldberg). Let's ask ourselves
where is this ambassador coming from (Clarin points out that
Ambassador Goldberg served in Kosovo). We are not going to
allow the United States to continue plotting conspiracies to
divide Bolivia among oligarchic and mafioso groups. When
they can no longer dominate the democracies that are
liberated and not submissive, then they plot to divide."
Morales's comment came in response to a question asking
whether Kosovo events could repeat themselves in Bolivia.
2. When asked if a Democrat victory in the U.S. might
improve relations with Bolivia, Morales said, "I understand
there are policies of state in the United States, but we
would like them to start respecting human rights and start
respecting the transformations in different countries of
Latin America. For that, they must end their espionage,
subjection, and arrogance. From the (U.S.) Embassy, they
were calling me Bin Laden."
