(SBU) MFA Syrian Desk Officer, Laszlo Szabo, discussed
reftel with PolOff on 7 January. Szabo stated that Hungary
would address this issue through the mechanisms of their
European Union membership rather than through any unilateral
statement on the subject. Although Szabo was not sure if the
EU has yet to address the reftel subject, he commented that,
in particular on issues of human rights, Hungary supports the
United States' position in the majority of instances in EU
discussions.
