REF: STATE 50488
Post delivered reftel demarche to Viorel Olea, Deputy General
Director of Naval Transport in the Ministry of Transportation (MOT).
He had no immediate comments on the proposal, but agreed to share it
within the Government of Romania (GOR) and to forward it to the
agency responsible for port operations, which is subordinated to the
MOT. Olea did mention a successful port security evaluation visit
conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard in 2006 and said that he would
welcome any similar visits in the future. EconOff noted that a USCG
visit is tentatively planned for this fall. Post's Naval Attache has
also passed the contents of this demarche to naval contacts. Post
will follow up with GOR officials to elicit reactions on the Global
Maritime Partnerships proposal after they have had the opportunity
to consider it further.
