1. (SBU) During a November 17 meeting in Belgrade, Serbian Foreign
Minister Vuk Jeremic confirmed to visiting EUR/SCE Deputy Assistant
Secretary Stuart Jones that Serbia would abstain from the upcoming
UN General Assembly Third Committee vote on the Iran no-action
motion (NAM)(reftels). Jeremic said there was "no chance" Serbia
would change its position due to Iran's support for Serbia "in the
Muslim world on the issue of Kosovo recognition." Serbia would not
support Iran on "important issues, such as arms sales," but on this
issue, Serbia "had promised Iran," Jeremic said.
2. (SBU) DAS Jones strongly objected to Jeremic on Serbia's
position and reiterated the seriousness of this issue, noting that
there could be strong implications for Serbia's decision.
3. (U) DAS Jones did not clear on this cable before departing
Belgrade.
