1. (C) Charge raised points about Afghanistan's candidacy
with Rola Noureddine, PM Siniora's chief aide, on August 18.
Noureddine took note of the information about Afghanistan's
and Iran's candidacies, in addition to that of Syria, but was
non-committal about what position the GOL would take.
2. (C) COMMENT: Lebanon's relations with Syria are improving.
Lebanese president Sleiman just last week (August 13-14)
traveled to Syria and reached agreement with Syrian President
Asad to establish diplomatic relations for the first time in
the 60-plus years since the two countries won independence
from France. END COMMENT.
