(C) As instructed reftel, PolOff urged Chinese participation
in the March 14 coalition convention in Beirut in a March 10
conversation with MFA West Asian and North African Affairs
Department Levant Division Deputy Director Xu Chen. Xu
stressed that China seeks to play a helpful role in the
stabilization of Lebanon, as evidenced by their participation
in UNIFIL, and he would relay our request to the Chinese
Embassy in Beirut. He cautioned, however, that his office
was unfamiliar with the event, and noted that on short notice
it may be difficult to arrange high-level participation.
