1. Post did not receive a substantive response to its demarche on
the Global Maritime Partnership. However, Post notes that the
Gambian government might be responsive to future collaborations
following the successful installation of the Maritime Security and
Safety Information System (MSSIS) in Banjul in February 2008. MSSIS
provides the Gambia Navy with desktop information on maritime
traffic in Gambian territorial waters, and in the larger region.
MSSIS helps to facilitate vibrant maritime commerce that underpins
economic security and protects nations against illegal fishing,
illegal immigration, drug trafficking, human trafficking,
environmental pollution, oil theft, piracy, terrorism or
proliferation activities, as well as making a key contribution to
maritime safety and search and rescue efforts.
