Ouane and Health Minister Oumar Ibrahima Toure of the USG's
active support for Michel Sidibe's candidacy for UNAIDS
Executive Director on September 12, a position that had been
presaged during U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary
Michael O. Leavitt's visit. In response to her inquiry about
Mali's efforts to promote his candidacy, both replied that
while Mali had not yet reached out to Secretary General Ban
or formally contacted UN members states in support of Mr.
Sidibe's candidacy, they expected to imminently; each
expressed gratitude for U.S. support for Sidibe.
