1. (C) On December 28 an Embassy source spoke with a
mid-level member of Eritrea's National Security Agency (ANS)
about the December 26 border clash between Eritrean and
Ethiopian forces. The ANS officer said that Eritrean
military casualties from the clash were 5 dead and 24
captured. There was no report on the number of wounded, nor
on estimated Ethiopian casualties.
2. (C) The Embassy source is well known and considered to
be credible, but PolOff has not been able to corroborate this
report with other sources.
