1. (SBU) This is another in a series of weekly reports on PKK
violence in Turkey. Our primary source is the Turkish General Staff
(TGS) website, which documents contacts and clashes with the PKK, as
well as casualties incurred.
2. (U) During the September 16-23, 2008 reporting period, one
security official died in a PKK-linked IED explosion. Six officials
were injured, including one in a clash and the rest in IED
explosions. The total number of security force casualties for the
year through September 23, 2008, was 105 killed and 163 injured.
3. (U) During the same period, one PKK terrorist was killed in a
clash. Four PKKers were captured and another seven surrendered.
According to official TGS website figures, through the third week of
September, the number of PKK militants killed this year was 595, the
number of those captured was 135, and the number of those who
surrendered was 118.
4. (U) During the reporting period one citizen was killed in an IED
explosion in Sason, Batman Province on September 19. Another was
injured in an IED explosion in Yuksekova, Hakkari Province on
September 22. Four citizens were kidnapped by the PKK. One was
kidnapped in Semdinli, Hakkari Province on September 19, two in
Nazimiye, Tunceli Province on September 20 and a second in Hakkari
on September 21. The total number of civilian casualties for the
year through the end of the second week of September, was 43 killed,
with another 244 wounded.
