SUBJECT: JORDAN CONSIDERING CO-SPONSORSHIP OF U.S./EC TAFT GOODS
PROPOSAL

REF: STATE 12905

(SBU) EconCouns and local EU First Secretary Claus Heiberg delivered
reftel demarche to Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) Secretary
General Montaser Okla and MOIT Director of the Foreign Trade Policy
Directorate Maha al-Ali on March 16. Okla welcomed efforts to
streamline the trade in textiles, and commented that although the
draft agreement required further analysis, Jordan agreed with its
intent and would hope to co-sponsor it at the WTO. He was
particularly interested in how the revised process would affect
inputs used in items manufactured in Jordan. Okla encouraged
further engagement with the Jordanian delegation in Geneva, and said
his ministry would signal its acceptance of the proposed agreement
or highlight areas for discussion as soon as possible.
