1. (C) PolCouns delivered Ref A demarche to Ministry of
Foreign Affairs Director of International Organizations Ayman
Al-Aamiry on September 2. Aamiry called the issue a "tough
one" for Jordan, pointing to the impression of a double
standard on the issue in light of Kosovo. While asserting
that the Jordanian government agreed with the U.S. position
"by default," Aamiry did not offer a substantive response to
the call for Jordan to publicly reject Russia's recognition
of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. In response to a question,
Aamiry said that he was not aware of any Russian Embassy
diplomatic outreach to the GOJ regarding the issue.
2. (C) Comment: As reported in Ref B, the GOJ is paying
close attention to its equities with regards to its efforts
to bolster ties with Russia. A public position on South
Ossetia and Abkhazia is not likely to be forthcoming. End
comment.
