SUBJECT: DEMARCHE REQUEST ON WIPO DIRECTOR GENERAL ELECTION
-- JORDAN

REF: STATE 47557

(SBU) Ministry of Industry and Trade Secretary General
Montaser Oklah advised EconCouns May 7 that Jordan would
support the candidacies of Yo Takagi (Japan) and Jose Graca
Aranha (Brazil) for election as Director General of the World
Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Instructions have
been conveyed to the Jordanian Ambassador in Geneva who is
scheduled to attend the WIPO Coordination Committee meeting.
EconCouns shared with Oklah the five candidates the U.S.
considers to be uniquely qualified to lead WIPO, and Oklah
promised to consider them should the Japanese or Brazilian
candidate fail to advance through the successive rounds of
voting. Oklah commented that the GOJ has received numerous
demarches on the WIPO election, and believes Aranha to be the
current front-runner.
