1. (U) According to April 4 media reports, the Ministry of Interior
has suspended temporarily the proposed repatriation of Liberian
refugees until the announced Tripartite Committee (TC) establishes
its procedures. Post will confirm and provide additional reports as
information is available.

3. (SBU)Q a conversatioQpril 4 with Refugee Coordinator, Ghana
Refugee Board Chair Mumuni Bawumia confirmed the press reports that
refugees would not be immediately deported, but said that the GOG
had neverQtended to go forward with repatriations before
consulting with the Committee.

2. (SBU) Comment: This is a welcome development which will allow
UNHCR time to work with the Governments of Liberia and Ghana to
develop an orderly repatriation program, address legal concerns, and
establish suitable reception program for returnees. End Comment.
