SUBJECT: ARMENIA JOINS INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION ON PROTECTION AND
PROMOTION OF RIGHTS AND DIGNITY OF DISABLED PERSONS
1. Armenia joined the International Convention on Protection and
Promotion of Rights and Dignity of Disabled Persons March 30, the
first day of its signing. (NOTE: The convention was adopted by the
UN General Assembly in December. END NOTE.) Armenia also signed
the Optional Protocol. The convention aims to protect and promote
the rights of the disabled by eliminating bias and ensuring their
rights to employment, education and healthcare.
2. COMMENT: The signing of the convention is at least a step in the
right direction by the GOAM, which has done little in the way of
ensuring the rights of the disabled.
