1. During a phone call between Polish Minister of Economy
Wozniak and Secretary of Commerce Gutierrez on January 31,
Wozniak asked the USG to support a Polish candidate for the
position of OECD Deputy Secretary General. Deputy Minister
of Economy Naimski subsequently informed CDA of the request.
The Polish candidate is Janusz Swierkocki and a summary of
his bio follows. His complete CV was faxed to EUR/NCE Putney.


2. BIO OF JANUSZ SWIERKOCKI
Born February 18, 1949
Swierkocki received an MA in Economics in 1972, a doctorate
in Economics in 1977, and PhD in Economics in 1986, all from
the University of Lodz. He speaks English, French, and
Spanish in addition to his native Polish.

Currently, Swierkocki is an economics professor and Vice Dean
at the University of Lodz, where he has been on the faculty
since 1972. From 1996-2001 he was the manager of the
research section of the Foundation for European Studies -
European Institute in Lodz. From 1991-1995 he served as a
Consular Officer for the Commercial Office of the Polish
Government in Toronto, Canada. From 1990-1991 he advised the
Polish President on antimonopoly issues. And from 1988-1989
he was a visiting professor at the Universidad Nacional de
Bogota in Columbia.

Swierkocki has published numerous economic articles in both
local and international journals, particularly on Poland's
integration into the European Union. He has also published a
few books, including a textbook on European integration.
