1. (U) The UN Secretariat announced on August 17 that UN
Secretary-General Ban had received a letter dated August 15
SIPDIS
from Prime Minister Jan Balkenende informing him that the
Government of the Netherlands is "favorably disposed" to
hosting the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, created pursuant to
UNSC resolution 1757. The Secretariat added that the SYG
plans to dispatch a delegation to the Netherlands in the
coming weeks to discuss practical arrangements required for
the establishment and operation of the Special Tribunal. The
SYG is expected to submit a report to the Security Council on
September 5 describing his efforts to set up the Tribunal in
the 90 days following adoption of resolution 1757.
