POINT DELISTINGS
REF: STATE 94092
1. (SBU) USUN Poloff met on July 9 with G7 counterparts and
delivered REFTEL points regarding Ahmed Idris Nasreddin's
delisting request. Nasreddin is currently under UN sanctions
because of his association with al-Qaida. Nasreddin
petitioned for delisting through the newly established focal
point mechanism, created by resolution 1730 (2006).
2. (SBU) Italy reported that a state prosecutor in Milan is
investigating Nasreddin and would decide whether or not to
bring a criminal indictment against him by mid-October.
Italy therefore requested that we extend the period of
consideration for Nasreddin's delisting request for an
additional three months. G7 delegations agreed and decided
to contact other States with a nexus to the case (Bahamas,
Morocco, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, and Turkey) to secure
their support for the delay. On July 12, G7 delegations
informed the 1267 (al-Qaida/Taliban) Sanctions Committee
Chairman of our joint decision, in conformity with resolution
1730 (2006),to extend consideration of the delisting request
for three months.
3. (SBU) Separately, Italy and USUN agreed to extend the
period of consideration for Youssef Nada's delisting request
for an additional two months.
