SUBJECT: LETTER FROM UN SECRETARY GENERAL ON APRIL 16
ECOSOC MEETING WITH BRETTON WOODS INSTITUTIONS

1. Mission received the letter below from Secretary General
(SYG) Ban Ki-Moon, regarding the April 16 special ECOSOC
high-level meeting with the Bretton Woods institutions,
requesting ministerial level representation. Unless otherwise
instructed, Ambassador Miller will attend for the U.S.

2. Begin text of SYG letter:

27 March 2007

Excellency,

As you are aware, the special high-level meeting of the
Economic and Social Council with the Bretton Woods
institutions, the World Trade Organization and the United
Nations Conference on Trade and Development will be held in
New York on 16 April 2007.

The President of the Council, His Excellency Mr. Dalius
Cekuolis, has recently written to you and provided details on
the meeting. I am writing to you to stress the importance
that the United Nations attaches to the special high-level
meeting, as one of the key vehicles for following up on the
commitments made at the International Conference on Financing
for Development in 2002 and at the World Summit.

The special high-level meeting has also become one of the key
annual fora for global policy dialogue among the United
Nations and the international financial and trade
institutions. This strengthened collaboration will
contribute to advancing the development agenda agreed by
Member States at the United Nations global conferences,
culminating in the 2005 World Summit.

Given the high priority attached to this meeting and the
gains for international cooperation that it could help
produce, I encourage your country to be represented at the
ministerial level.

Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest
consideration.

Ban Ki-moon
