1. (C) PolOff approached European Council Secretariat
officials covering Syria and human rights August 27,
requesting public statements supporting Riad Seif's request
for travel to Germany as well as a demarche to Damascus on
Seif's case. The Charge followed-up in an August 31 meeting
with Christian Jouret, Council Secretariat Director for
Middle Eastern Affairs. Jouret confirmed that the EU had
demarched the Syrians, said that the EU shares U.S. views on
this situation, and noted that the EU will continue to
monitor Seif's case.
