1. (SBU) President Enkhbayar told the Charge' he was very pleased
with the results of his October 22-30 visit to the U.S. and
particularly his meetings with President Bush and other senior USG
officials as well as the historic signing of Mongolia's Millennium
Challenge Account Compact. Enkhbayar felt his trip would contribute
to significantly improving bilateral relations and understanding.
Though he had visited the U.S. before, Enkhbayar said he was
impressed with the magnitude of U.S. development as well as the vast
size of the U.S., having stopped in Washington D.C., New York,
Chicago, Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Los Angeles.
2. (SBU) During a very brief airport welcoming ceremony the evening
of October 31, Enkhbayar and his delegation was received by the
State Great Hural (parliament) Speaker Lundejantsan, embattled Prime
Minister Enkhbold (who may soon lose his job as PM; septel to
follow),and several cabinet ministers as well as the Charge'.
Foreign Minister Enkhbold told the Charge' the trip had been a great
success. All the meetings had been useful and fruitful, he said,
adding that all the arrangements made by the USG had been superb and
demonstrated that "the U.S. really cares about Mongolia." For his
part, the FM said he was especially pleased to sign the bilateral
Declaration of Principles, which bodes well for the long-term
expansion of bilateral relations. The FM said he looks forward to
meet with Ambassador Minton to express his thanks following the
Ambassador's return on November 5.
